I recently watched the Israeli film, “Beaufort,” which focuses on the soldiers stationed in Lebanon just prior to the withdrawal of forces in 2000. Contrary to the picture I got from a few reviews, it wasn’t that “anti-war” at all (refreshingly so). At least not in the annoying and stereotypical way that is so prevalent in movies these days. No lame half-hidden slogans and heavy personal opinion. Instead, I found it to be thought provoking and well written. Very down to earth and realistic. The writers did a good job portraying the depressing futility that the Israeli forces are often subjected to: Sacrificing all for very little. Men fight and die while those in power dilly dally over deals and “bargains.” The sitting-duck-feel present in this film is a good example of the aforementioned frustrating situation.
