A Preparation of Impromptu Remarks

This is an uneducated speculation, but I wonder if lead poisoning has any connection with autism. There is no known cause, and people have been debating it forever. Some even speculated that having a child watch too much TV at an early age was to blame. I don’t buy it. What better way to weaken a country and disable a generation by providing their kids with toys containing high quantities of harmful metal? Lead is known to be connected to slowing mental development and lowering IQ. It can even cause speaking problems and hearing deficits. So who knows? I blame lead for my inablitiy to smell.
You just have to wonder…

I like the new look around here. That is an interesting question about autism. I tend to believe that autism is more a personality trait than a disorder. Every year more people qualify as autistic because the net being cast gets wider and wider. Some people do have mental health issues, but I think some kids are just quiet, reserved, shy. Not everyone is a type a personality ya know?

Autism does effect the personality, but the personality (shyness, etc.) doesn’t dub one autistic. I think more people may be diagnosed with Asperger’s each year. Some like to call that a milder form of autism. People with Aspergers syndrome normally are harder to recognize and are just a little out of it socially. Kids with autism, on the other hand, have very identifiable symptoms that place them in that category. For instance, they are extremely sensitive to light, sounds, touch – basically anything sensory. That’s why they’re usually more withdrawn. It is known that their brain neurons, for some unidentified reason, are damaged or under-developed. This hinders their ability to communicate properly and pick up on social hints. I know lots of quieter, type-b personalities. I’m one of them! That doesn’t make someone autistic. Autism is – despite it’s mysterious cause – a very defined diagnoses, whereas Aspergers is a little less defined. However, I find it’s pretty easy to identify someone with Aspergers as they generally have no concept of what others around them are thinking. This isn’t to say that there are no people out there that are just plain socially awkward.

Sorry if you knew all of that already. I kind of went off on that one because my mom works with a large variety of special needs kids and I’ve been exposed to it for quite a while.
