A Preparation of Impromptu Remarks

This is the fourth time in the last two weeks that I’ve witnessed/seen the after effects of a bird flying into a window. If I were a PETA person I’d be against any kind of glass cleaner (though I should mention that our windows are not clean at all). I wonder what the death toll is for birds and accidents of this matter…

He flew away after about 10 minutes of being in a daze.

Bird/window casualties are pretty bad, especially in cities near migration routes. Birds that aren’t familiar with the area will fly through, not recognize glass-sided high rises as obstacles, and fall a long way down…

As for the little guy in the picture, if he flew away, then he was probably OK. Birds are tougher than we think, and feathers are a very efficient body armor.

My pet parrot once flew around the apartment and slammed full tilt into the glass balcony door. We thought she’d broken her wing, but she was fine by the time we got to the vet’s office.

Ahhh, a good excuse NOT to clean my windows!
